Create an OpenAI API key

Create an OpenAI API key to activate the GPT for Sheets and Docs add-on.

An API key is a unique identifier that grants you access to the ChatGPT API and other OpenAI APIs. OpenAI uses this key to track your usage and generate accurate billing.

  1. Log in or sign up to the OpenAI platform.

    Use the Log in or Sign up button

  2. Click Create new secret key.

    In the API Keys window, use the Create new secret key button
    Warning

    Check that your key is working by running a prompt in the playground.

    If your free trial is expired, inactive, or not working, you must set up a paid account in the billing dashboard.

  3. Copy your key to your clipboard.

    In the API key generated window, use the Copy button
